So why do I bring it up now?
Because a popular blog, Gizmodo, recently released an Anti-RIAA Manifesto and have officially called for a RIAA boycott for March.
DISCLAIMER: I am not advocating Piracy. There are many ways to enjoy music while still supporting the artists. If you must buy music, I would encourage you to use eMusic or searching RIAA Radar to find CDs that aren't published by RIAA record labels.
You are probably asking yourself, "What is the RIAA?" or, "Why should I care about the actions of the RIAA?" Well, here's a list:
The RIAA is Anti-Consumer:
- They believe it's their god given right for you to give them money.
- They use the most underhanded
extortionlegal tactics to go after "piracy." - They impose restrictions on legitimately purchased music.
- Their sister company, the MPAA, even privately admit that DRM isn't about piracy, it's about maximizing profits.
- A study conducted by their Canadian offices found that "Pirates" actually buy more music.
- They HATE Fair Use.
- They aren't above fudging the details.
- Ask any artist how much compensation they received from the RIAA lawsuit cases.
- Their own artists don't like the file sharing lawsuits.
- They love to screw their own artists as much as their customers.
- They don't like it when you record Satillite Radio.
- They have made an enemy of Steve Jobs, the most powerful man in digital media.
- They are not above crying to congress for stricter laws.
- They say that CD ripping is not fair use, despite what their own lawyers have said.
- They are threatening anybody with an open WiFi connection.
- And finally, let us remember that this same group, along with the MPAA, have a history of fighting against new technologies like Cassettes, the VCR, CD burners, and the Radio.
